Film Transfer: 8mm, Super 8mm and 16mm
Over time film can become brittle, dirty and scratched making them useless for viewing. Preserve the memories captured on your film reels onto DVD or high-quality digital video to archive them for generations to come. At Discovery Media Productions, each project is handled personally and with the quality and care that we have come to be known for.
Each film reel will be cleaned twice by hand from start to finish and examined for any previous damage to the film, such as misaligned splicing points or ripped sprocket holes. Any repairs or leader film added to the beginning or end of each reel will be performed at no extra charge.
Our 8mm and Super-8mm transfers use an advanced frame-by-frame scanning process. Damaged film with ripped sprockets is not affected by the transfer process because sprockets are not used to pull the film. The film is then scanned, frame-by-frame, using the sharper emulsion side of the film using a camera with three 1/2-inch-chip CCDs through the enlarged gate of the mechanism, allowing a full, 100%-size scan of the image, not cropped as used in most telecine transfers. The film is lit using an ultra-cool LED light which is much gentler on the film than most high-temperature bulbs. Each progressive-scanned image is then pieced together via customized software to create a speed-accurate motion image, no matter at what frame rate the film was originally shot.
